Our story

Inspiring photographers
since 2013

Exposed Schools of Photography began in 2013, when Kam Assi founded the Bedfordshire School of Photography to bridge a gap in photography education. Recognising a lack of practical, hands-on evening classes for adults, he set out to create a learning environment where students could gain real-world photography skills, whatever their experience level.

It worked, and it grew. The same courses now run at three schools — Bedfordshire, Kent and Cornwall — each with its own tutor and its own room, teaching the same curriculum.

Our courses are designed to be inclusive, accessible and engaging, catering to complete beginners, hobbyists and experienced photographers alike. Whether you are looking to start a career, explore a new passion, or refine your skills in retirement, we provide expert-led instruction tailored to your goals.

How we teach

Expert-led learning

Unlike theory-heavy courses, we prioritise practical learning, so students gain confidence through hands-on experience with their own cameras.

Theory only where it earns its place. You will be shooting in the first session, and in every session after it.

Qualified to teach

Every tutor is a working photographer and holds formal teaching qualifications. Knowing the craft and being able to teach it are two different things.

Every one of them still works as a photographer, and every one of them is qualified to teach. The curriculum is the same at all three schools. Who stands at the front of the room is what changes.

Kam Assi

Founder and lead tutor, Bedfordshire

Over 35 years as a professional photographer

Kam founded the school in 2013 after years of being asked where an adult could go to learn photography properly in the evening. He teaches the Bedfordshire courses himself.

Outside the classroom he runs Abraxas Commercial and Abraxas Weddings, and oversees a team of more than fifty photographers covering university graduations across the UK and Europe.

Alastair Scarlett

Weddings, schools, commercial, events, portraiture, landscape and wildlife

Al brings the working photographer's side of the Cornwall teaching. He shoots across weddings, schools, commercial work, events, portraiture, landscape and wildlife, and pulls all of it into the sessions.

The focus is on practical skills and confident camera use rather than theory for its own sake.

A career in education

Simon has worked in education throughout his adult life, and brings the teaching craft to the Cornwall room.

Between them, he and Al cover both halves of the job: what to do with a camera, and how to get somebody else to understand it.

Ian Crouch

Over 20 years in portraiture, events and weddings

Ian teaches the Kent courses. He is a working portrait, event and wedding photographer, and has spent thirty years teaching alongside it.

His sessions are hands on from the start. The aim is that you leave not just knowing what the dials do, but confident enough to make your own decisions about a photograph.

Beyond the classroom

A leader in
the industry

Our founder's expertise extends well beyond the classroom. Kam Assi oversees a team of more than fifty graduation photographers, covering university photography events across the UK and Europe, and his leadership, training and coordination make sure every one of them runs with professionalism and precision.

He is also the founder of two long-established photography and video production businesses. While he leads the schools, his teams run the day to day of both — and some of those team members were once his students.

After the course

More than
a school

We are a community of photographers, not just a place to learn. Students get ongoing support and encouragement long after the last session, and some past students have gone on to build successful careers in photography — a few of them joining the professional teams.

Level 3 finishes with a public exhibition. For most people that is the first time their photographs have been printed properly, hung, and looked at by strangers, and it changes how you see your own work.
